Café numérique Liège – Retour sur la Webmission au SXSW

L’équipe du Café Numérique Liège nous a invité dernièrement à raconter notre voyage à Austin, à l’occasion du SXSW. C’est bien volontiers que l’équipe de la Webmission s’est donc déplacée en cité ardente!

C’est avec Jenny, Eric, Pierre Yves que nous avons répondu aux questions. Chose intéressante pour nous, la moitié de l’assemblée ignorait ce qu’était la Webmission. Nous avons donc ré expliqué les tenants et aboutissants, la brillante initiative de Laurent Eschenauer en 2009; les différents déplacements à San Francisco etc.

Une fois le concept « Webmission » posé, les questions habituelles fusent: mais quel est le résultat? Avez vous levé des fonds? Quel est l’intérêt?

Par rapport à tous ces témoignages, je voudrais aussi prendre quelques lignes pour évoquer un exemple, et bel exemple, omis lors du CaféN: TweetWallPro. Pascal Alberty et Vincent Vandoorne avaient le produit en tête depuis plusieurs semaines lorsque s’est présentée l’opportunité de rejoindre la Webmission. Accaparés par leur entreprise respective (Tesial et Akimedia pour ne pas les citer), ils ne parvenaient pas à prendre le temps utile à la concrétisation de TweetWallPro.

Le fait de rejoindre la Webmission, et le pitch à présenter lors du SF NewTech, ont provoqué le focus indispensable à la concrétisation. TweetWallPro a été terminé quelques jours, heures, avant la Webmission. Depuis, le produit s’impose comme relais de la twittosphère aussi bien en télé, que lors de conférences un peu partout dans le monde.

Ces témoignages sont aussi l’explication d’une certaine difficulté à comprendre la « webmission ». L’objectif n’est pas unique (levée de fonds). Chacun apporte son vécu, et a ses propres objectifs.

Comment j’ai vécu le SXSW 2012

Quinze jours déjà que le South by Southwest a pris fin. Tentative de bilan.

La base de l’histoire, c’est encore une fois la Webmission. Greg (qui avait participé à SXSW2011) et Vincent ont eu envie de nous emmener ailleurs qu’à San Francisco; et se sont chargés de l’organisation de ce déplacement à Austin, Texas. Ayant écouté Greg nous faire son retour d’expérience; ayant lu en ligne pas mal de bonnes choses sur le SXSW, j’ai simplement dit « banco ». Sans toutefois réellement savoir ce qu’était vraiment cette réunion de geeks du monde entier…

Effectivement, il est difficile de s’imaginer le SXSW sans y avoir participé… Et c’est ça le plus déroutant, en fait. Lors des Webmission précédentes, le programme était clair, les visites établies. Bref, pas de prise de tête. A Austin, par contre, on s’arrache un peu les cheveux. La faute à un programme dense, aux nombres de sujets abordés, à la multiplication des lieux où se déroulent les panels, … Pour être clair, comptez pouvoir assister à 5-6 panels sur la journée. Vous multipliez par 3 (pour les sessions parallèles) puis par le nombre de lieux. D’ou ma grande frustration, le premier jour, de ne pas savoir comment choisir au mieux ce à quoi on veut assister. Pour un passionné, dont les centres d’intérêts sont multiples, comment choisir entre entrepreneuriat, journalisme, commerce local, institutions et nouvelles technologies, etc, etc..? Malchance supplémentaire, la météo du vendredi-samedi était franchement détestable. Ne donnant pas l’envie de sortir de l’endroit où la journée commençait… Frustration, disais-je.

Une fois cette barrière franchie, on peut enfin commencer à apprécier l’événement, et ce qu’il a à offrir. Les speakers ne sont en effet pas n’importe qui, leur parcours est impressionnant, et ils vous sont accessibles. D’abord durant le Q&A à la fin du panel, et en discussion informelle par la suite. Alors bien sur, vous n’apprenez pas toujours de l’inédit, mais au minimum, cela confirme que la veille que vous menez, les choix réalisés ne sont pas « à côté de la plaque ». Ca vous permet aussi de confirmer que les personnes dont vous avez fait des références, sont bien celles que vous imaginiez. Enfin, de mettre un visage et une relation IRL sur un avatar.

Le SXSW, c’est aussi une ouverture sur le monde. Vous discutez avec le responsable éditorial d’un groupe de presse couvrant l’ensemble du territoire US; avec un journaliste européen, désormais chargé de cours à LA, avec des parisiens, des australiens… Sur les difficultés de chacun, leur manière d’aborder et résoudre un problème. Très enrichissant. Sans parler des échanges au sein même de notre groupe « webmission ».

On n’oubliera pas d’évoquer un aspect qui fait aussi la réputation du SXSW, autrement dit: les soirées! La météo des deux premiers jours a permis d’éviter un démarrage en force. Ceci dit, la réputation n’est pas usurpée. Sixth street noire de monde; Foursquare party mémorable… Bref, le SXSW, on ne s’y repose pas.

Premiers pas au SXSW 2012

Day one du SXSW, avec ce matin la récupération du badge d’accès aux différents accueillant les présentations. Une belle organisation, rapide, fluide, malgré la masse de personnes débarquand au Austin convention center. Trois mille personnes faisant la file… L’organisation est rodée, et ça défile.
Plus terre à terre, c est la soupe à la grimace niveau météo… Il drache, il fait très frais… Rien de bien différent de ce qui se passe par chez nous pour le moment. Fingers crossed pour la suite, sachant que suivant le thème des sessions que l on souhaite suivre, on se déplace d’hôtel en hôtel…
